Winter 2010 Seasonal Outlook is now on the web. You may wish to access the page >>here

2. Tide gauge at Agalega and Blue Bay

In order to enhance its capacity to monitor sea level and detecting tsunamis, Mauritius Meteorological Services has installed a tide gauge at Agalega and another one at Blue Bay. With the installation of these two equipments, the Service now has 4 tide gauges; the other two are located at Port Louis and Rodrigues

It is recalled that a tide gauge is a device for measuring sea level and eventually detecting tsunamis.

3. Wave rider at Blue Bay

A new wave rider buoy was launched in September 2009 off Blue Bay. A wave rider buoy is an equipment for measuring heights of wave at sea. As the buoy is raised by each passing wave, its vertical acceleration is measured and processed. Half hourly data is sent to a receiver onshore, namely at Plaisance Meteorological Station. From there the readings are sent to the Main Forecast Office at Vacoas.

4. Training events

i)  ACClimate project Workshop

The ACClimate project Workshop hosted by the Mauritius Meteorological Services was held between 19 and 23 October 2009. Member countries of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), namely Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, Reunion and Mauritius met during these five days with the goal of “Strengthening the capacities of the IOC countries to adapt to Climate Change”.

At the workshop member countries worked towards homogenization of regional climate data and the computation of climate change indices which will allow the concerned institution to detect and monitor climate change.

ii) Workshop on “Communicating weather information to the media”

A workshop in strengthening the capacity of meteorologists of the Mauritius Meteorological Services in communicating weather information to the media was held at the Regional Meteorological Training Centre between 30 November and 04 December 2009. Ms Patricia Boyle, UKMet Office PWS Manager was the resource person. Applying her experience gained at the British Met Office, she brilliantly shared her knowledge with local forecasters, conducting a few practical sessions as well.
